Getting the training or certifications you need!

by CareerMVP.com

Tired of being turned down for jobs or promotions because you do not have the proper degree, certification or training? There are numerous options now for getting the training you need. When evaluating training programs, it's important to realize that each has its purpose. No one method can possibly fit every situation. So, choose wisely.

Technical Schools - A lot of the classes you need for certification are offered by your local technical school. The best part is that they are significantly cheaper than the alternatives. Whether you want to get into HVAC, electrical, plumbing, graphics, photography, software, CAD or even real estate, technical schools are set-up to provide specific training for a particular industry.

Colleges & Universities - Companies often require a four-year degree, masters or doctorate. If this is required for your career of choice, there is no other option than to buckle down and earn your degree. However, don't get caught in the trap that you have to have a four-year degree. Research your industry to see if it is worth investing the time. Sometimes experience and a technical degree are your best route.

Government Agencies - No matter what industry you are in, there is a government agency that regulates it. When researching your career, you should always consult the government agency to learn any certifications you may need. The government has made this easy with one site FirstGov.gov (OPENS NEW WINDOW) We also try to list these organizations in our industry sites which you can access by clicking 'Industry Research' in the menu of our site.

Industry Associations - Every industry has at least one respected association that has the purpose of promoting that industry. They often offer training and certification programs. While these certifications may not be required, they are usually respected by others in the industry. To find the associations in your industry, visit our industry sites by clicking 'Industry Research' in the menu of our site.

Corporate Training Companies - There are numerous major corporations who specialize in training. Some have built impressive credentials that will be immediately recognized on your resume. The most successful firms have programs that are not offered anywhere else. However, some also offer programs that you can get a lot cheaper at your local technical school.

Software - Software can also be a great way to learn about your industry, prepare for a certification test or even learn software.

Books & Magazines - Let's not forget about the original form of education, books. Sometimes you just can't replace the the knowledge assembled by professional authors and publishers. Industry sites like ours can be a great tool for learning about the industry. But, their purpose and content are entirely different from industry magazines. If you're serious about your industry, you'll want to subscribe to several industry publications. While you'll find a great selection online or in your local bookstore, always check for publications from your industry association.

Online Training - You can learn just about anything online now. Some industries even recognize online training classes for certification purposes. Online learning is best for subjects that do not require interaction with other people, 3D objects or the real world. Just remember that the essence of some degrees and educational programs is interaction with people. One example would be a business degree like the MBA. A large portion of the educational value of the MBA is the interaction with the faculty, supporting companies and other students during your program and after you graduate. Remember that it's not always what you know; it's who you know!
