Job Title Meteorologist

Primary Purpose
What your role contributes to Scripps
The meteorologist is responsible for preparing and delivering accurate weather reports for newscasts. The meteorologist must have NWS and/or AMS seal within three years.

Key Activities
The primary processes you conduct in your role
  • Prepare and deliver daily weather content utilizing all available weather data and graphics computers
  • Prepare and deliver urgent weather updates interrupting regular programming as necessary
  • Prepare and deliver all weather content over multiple platforms
  • Assist management in evaluations of potential new weather data gathering and presentation computers
  • Report live from event sites
  • Write and produce content for multiple platforms
  • Report, write, capture visual content, edit, produce and post stories for multiple platforms
  • Gathers and verifies factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Perform various community service activities for station as assigned
  • Computer literacy required, including weather and newsroom computer systems.
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality camera equipment.
  • Knowledge of Final Cut Pro editing systems, or similar editing equipment.
  • Strong broadcast and AP style writing skills.
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Valid driver's license, driving record in compliance with station policy, and proof of insurability (liability limits of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident/$50,000 property as defined by station policy).
  • BS/BA in related discipline.
  • Generally 5-8 years of experience in related field. Certification is required in some areas.
OR
  • MS/MA and generally 3-5 years of experience in related field. Certification required in some areas.
  • Seasoned professional contributor with responsibility for an advanced area of work in the professional field.
  • May be responsible for entire projects or functions having modest scope/impact or portions of projects having considerable scope/impact.
  • Serves in a lead role in certain departments or functions where general guidance and training of less experienced professional and/or support personnel are needed.
  • Performs advanced areas of work for the professional field.
  • Identifies key barriers/core problems and applies problem-solving skills in order to deal creatively with complex situations. Troubleshoots and resolves complex problems.
  • Operates with considerable latitude. Independently performs assignments with instruction limited to results expected. Determines and develops approach to solutions.
  • Receives technical guidance only on unusual or complex problems or issues.
  • May oversee the completion of projects or assignments, including planning, assigning, monitoring and reviewing progress and accuracy of work, evaluating results, etc.
  • Contributes to employees' professional development, but does not have hiring or firing authority.
  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of particular field of specialization to the completion of complex assignments. Advanced knowledge of organization's technologies and practices. Lift up to 50 lbs. Sitting, walking and standing. May require overnight travel. Schedule may vary. Speak clearly and concisely.
